NBC 5: The Shops at Redbird Celebrating 50 Years

The Shops at Redbird celebrating 50 years in the community and future development.

The stage is set for the celebration of the Shops at Redbird happening this weekend. The southern Dallas mall, over the years, has gone through changes and faced challenges. People living in this community are glad it’s still standing. “I like it,” Hakeem Carbins, who lives in the area, said. “Real good neighborhood. I like the state of improvement they are doing.” Carbins, like many others, appreciate what's happening in the neighborhood.

What was then called Redbird Mall opened in 1975. It was a grand part of the community, but times changed and put its future in jeopardy. “What you saw was migration to further suburban areas of Dallas, Cedar Hill, Desoto, Duncanville,” Russell Glen Company CEO Terrence Maiden said.  He was also raised in Redbird. “Now over the last decade, we’ve been sort of reimagining, if you will, Redbird Mall and have rebranded it to the Shops at Redbird and have attracted some really good tenants here,” Maiden said. “Tenants like UT Southwestern, Parkland Children’s Medical, Foot Locker, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Palladium Residential. So, a lot of good tenants coming in and we hope to announce more in the future.”

Lasting 50 years, and the rebirth underway, is why the weekend celebration is so special. They are also celebrating Redbird's future. “Bright,” Maiden said, describing Redbird’s future. “The word we use is we see Redbird rising and I’m excited to see this new era and all it’s going to mean for the city of Dallas.”
